Reminder: Silica training must be completed by 1 July 2023

Please note: on 16 June 2023, Minister Gentleman announced a three month extension to the 1 July 2023 deadline for all workers in the building and construction industry to complete their mandatory silica training. This means that workers must now complete 10830NAT Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention prior to 1 October 2023 to continue to work on a construction site in the ACT.

WorkSafe ACT reminds all persons conducting a business of undertaking (PCBUs) of their duty to train workers about crystalline silica.

As the PCBU you must ensure all workers who fall under the list of specified occupations and those who may be exposed to silica dust as part of their work complete the Nationally accredited course 10830NAT – Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention prior to 1 July 2023.

Failure to comply with this training requirement will result in regulatory action.

The Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius has made clear her position on silica training and eliminating silica exposure for Canberra workers.

“WorkSafe ACT will continue to undertake inspections in line with our Compliance and Enforcement Policy, and we will take regulatory action where training has not been provided by 1 July 2023.

There is no cure for silicosis. We must do all we can to prevent this devastating disease.

Crystalline silica exposure prevention through a combination of control measures and training must be a priority in workplaces.”

Spaces are available now. To find a registered training organisation (RTO) and enrol your workers, go to Training.gov.au - 0830NAT - Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention.
