New ACT Asbestos Advice Notice for use from 1 July 2023

The ACT Government has released a new Asbestos Advice Notice.

The updated Notice provides advice on where asbestos materials may be found at home and now applies to all homes built in or before 1990.

The updated Notice must be given to new owners or lessees as part of tenancy agreements and contracts for sale for residential premises. It also needs to be provided during relevant development application processes.

The updated Notice will improve the overall safety approach to maintenance and renovation work and will help mitigate the ongoing risks posed by asbestos in residential premises.

The legislative instrument and the advice notice come into effect on 1 July 2023. You can download a guide to identifying asbestos in homes built before 1990 here.

Asbestos Safety

Asbestos is an ongoing hazard and the ACT Government is always looking for ways to advise the community about its dangers. While bonded asbestos is not as likely to cause illness as loose fill asbestos does, there is still a significant risk involved.

WorkSafe ACT has a range of online resources to help PCBUs the risks, impacts and best management practice of asbestos. You can view them here.
