Media Alert: International Workers' Memorial 2025
24 April 2025
Dear media colleagues,
WorkSafe ACT invites media representatives to attend the International Workers’ Memorial Day Event on Monday, 28 April 2025.
The event will start at 9:00am at the National Workers Memorial in Kings Park, Parkes ACT, on Monday, 28 April 2025, and will run for approximately 45 minutes.
Led by Unions ACT and supported by WorkSafe ACT, the Workers Memorial Day event is a time to reflect and remember the working Australians who have lost their lives and those who are still living with the consequences of work-related incidents and diseases. This event recognises the vital contribution and achievements of Australian workers in building this nation.
Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius will be speaking at the ceremony alongside ACT Skills, Training and Industrial Relations Minister Michael Pettersson and acting CMFEU Secretary Michael Hiscox. Ministers and MLAs Yvette Berry, Dr Marisa Paterson and Rachel Stephen-Smith will also be in attendance.
“We gather on this day to honour the memory of those workers who have tragically lost their lives at work. Their stories remind us of the critical importance of safety in every workplace. As we reflect on their contributions, we also renew our commitment to ensuring that every worker returns home safely. Together we can build a culture where safety and health are fundamental rights for all.” WHS Commissioner, Jacqui Agius.
In addition to the service, the National Carillon, John Gorton Building, Treasury Building and Old Parliament House will be illuminated purple in tribute to all the working Australians who have lost their lives. This will occur after 6pm on Monday, 28 April.
