Intelligence-led Inspection Campaign

On Tuesday, 9 January 2024 WorkSafe ACT launched an intelligence-led inspection campaign targeting the drivers of serious workers’ compensation claims in the ACT.

The ACT’s Work Health and Safety Commissioner, Jacqueline Agius, is eager for WorkSafe ACT to explore new ways of keeping workers safe. This campaign is based only on data and intelligence, allowing inspections to be targeted at specific areas of risk.

WorkSafe ACT analysed workers’ compensation data and identified the sub-industries and mechanisms with higher rates of serious injury claims in the ACT.

“Using this data, we have developed a targeted inspection campaign that focuses on specific areas of non-compliance that is driving these serious injuries. We can then work to reduce the number of these injuries we see in the future,” Ms Agius said.

The campaign begun this week with 16 WorkSafe ACT inspectors attending multiple businesses in the car retailing industry across the Territory. Inspectors assessed compliance with regulations relating to the most common causes of injuries, including mobile plant, manual tasks, and occupational violence.

Throughout 2024, WorkSafe ACT will continue conducting saturation campaigns of identified industries to assess compliance, improve available data and most importantly reduce harm.

Ms Agius urges all ACT businesses to use the start of the new year as an opportunity to review their work health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.

“Many of the causes of serious injury claims aren’t unknown; they are common, everyday hazards present in many workplaces.

“Consult with your workers, and with them review and update your risk assessments and your policies and procedures. Never assume that your policies can’t be improved or that an incident won’t occur in your workplace. Complacency can kill.”

Statement ends.
