Faulty electrical equipment

Your workplace must have controls to manage electrical risks. It is not just electricians and their apprentices that are at risk, poor electrical installation and faulty equipment and appliances can also cause electric shocks.

The primary electrical hazards found recently in ACT workplaces are:

  • - outdated and poorly maintained equipment, and
  • - contact with exposed live parts.

Working safely with electrical equipment

WorkSafe ACT reminds persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) that workers must not be exposed to electrical risks.

Electrical risks must be controlled as outlined in the Code of Practice for managing electrical risks including risk assessments, testing and tagging and maintaining electrical equipment. Before electrical activities are carried out, a risk assessment must be prepared. If a safe work method statement (SWMS) is needed, all electrical work must be carried out inline with the SWMS.

Electric shocks and any unauthorised work on energised equipment or systems must be notified to WorkSafe ACT. Notifications must be made immediately and by the fastest possible means. In many cases, this means calling WorkSafe ACT.

You can call WorkSafe ACT on 13 22 81, after hours on 0419 120 028. You can make a notification using the online form.
