Update on bonded asbestos contamination in ACT mulch: 4 negative results received

23 February 2024

WorkSafe ACT is continuing with its enquiries into the bonded asbestos confirmed to be present in mulch samples in the ACT.

Testing of the 29 currently identified sites known to have received the potentially contaminated cottage mulch is underway. Four new test results have been received this morning and all have returned negative for asbestos.

These negative test results are from residential locations and WorkSafe ACT is contacting those residents to inform them and advise that no further action is required. The associated prohibition notices on these sites have been lifted.

WorkSafe ACT is now also able to confirm that Green Options did not supply contaminated mulch to any customers and has been removed from the list of potential suppliers on the WorkSafe ACT website.

Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius thanks the community for their ongoing support and cooperation as the process continues.

“While today’s testing results are pleasing, I need to remind those with potentially contaminated sites to not disturb, handle or dispose of any mulch until testing is completed and WorkSafe ACT has been in contact with instructions.”

Testing will continue today and over the weekend, with more results expected in the coming days. WorkSafe ACT will work with accredited asbestos assessors to provide recommendations on potential remediation processes once results are known.

Testing summary:

  • Asbestos has been confirmed in 2 mulch samples in the ACT. Work is being undertaken to determine next steps for remediation of these locations.
    • The mulch has been isolated and prohibition notices have been issued.  The risk to the community remains low.
  • 4 sites have returned negative test results.
  • 5 sites have been tested and are awaiting results.
  • 10 more sites are booked for testing today and over the weekend.

WorkSafe ACT will continue to keep the community informed as test results and other information becomes available.

Statement ends.
