Return To Work Guide

A return to work plan is a tool for employers to proactively help injured or ill workers safely return to work or stay at work while they recover.

Who develops a return to work plan in collaboration with the injured or ill worker will vary depending on the workplace. It may be:

  • a supervisor or manager in a small business
  • the person in charge of HR or administration, or
  • a return to work coordinator

The return to work planning process can be challenging. To help with this Safe Work Australia developed their Return to work plan: A guide and template to assist anyone responsible for developing a return to work plan in understanding the process, and how to draft a plan using the template.

This resource was developed as an initiative under the National Return to Work Strategy 2020–2030.
