Crane dislodges in Belconnen skyline

On Saturday 14 November 2020, WorkSafe ACT commenced an investigation into the disassembly of a tower crane at a construction site in Belconnen.

A section of the crane’s boom was left partially suspended by a second crane after an error in the disassembly sequence.

Although the boom appeared to be in a precarious position there was no risk of any component falling.

The crane operator, in consultation with the crane manufacturer, moved quickly to secure the segment of the boom and the crane has since been safely removed without incident.

WorkSafe ACT inspectors have issued a prohibition notice relating to this incident while their enquiries continue.

Crane and hoist operation, and dogging and rigging work requires a high-risk work licence. Anyone operating a crane, needs to make sure they prioritise safety, know their WHS obligations and have a safe work method statement in place.
