Cross Border Cooperation focused on Workplace Safety

31 March 2023

SafeWork NSW and WorkSafe ACT are working together to improve work health and safety (WHS) in Queanbeyan, Canberra and the surrounding areas. The two WHS regulators will be conducting workplace inspections together between 3 and 7 April.

The agencies are working together to ensure a consistent regulatory approach for those businesses that work in both NSW & ACT.

Acting WHS Commissioner for the ACT Amanda Grey is pleased the cross border collaboration is taking place. “Working across the border is a daily activity for many workers and businesses in this region. We really want to break down barriers and remove confusion for these businesses by having a consistent approach to safety regulation. Working alongside the NSW regulator is vital to achieving this outcome.” Ms Grey said. “While there may be some minor differences in how we do things, we are all here for the same reason, to make sure all workplaces and workers are safe. When our Inspectors collaborate with other jurisdictions it helps broaden their knowledge which ultimately results in positive safety outcomes for the ACT community.”

Acting WHS Regional SafeWork NSW Director, Kane Scott said the Inspectors will mainly focus on falls risks in the construction, manufacturing and warehousing industries.

“Inspectors will be ensuring work health and safety compliance is at the forefront of all business operations. These compliance programs are part of an ongoing effort to promote sustained behavioural change” Mr Scott said.

“Workplace falls in manufacturing cost NSW businesses more than $15 million a year in claims while falls in construction continues to be the leading cause of traumatic injuries and fatalities in NSW”.

Businesses are encouraged to reach out to either SafeWork NSW on 13 10 50 or WorkSafe ACT on 13 22 81 should they require advice or assistance on complying with their WHS obligations.
