Security sensitive substances

Security sensitive substances such as security sensitive ammonium nitrate (sometimes referred to as SSAN) are controlled dangerous substances under the Dangerous Substances Act 2004, and can only be brought into the ACT or used, handled or stored within the ACT by a person authorised under a security sensitive substances licence.

There are strict limits on the activities for which a security sensitive substances licence may be issued, and a security assessment under the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979 (Cwlth) is required.

For information about applying for a licence to authorise the import, use, handling or storage of a security sensitive substance, and for information about security assessments requirements. Please contact the Dangerous Substances Team at WorkSafe ACT via dangeroussubstances@worksafe.act.gov.au.
