Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention Training
19 November 2023
Have you completed the 10830NAT Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention training?
WorkSafe ACT Inspectors continue to identify workers who have not completed the mandatory training requirements for working with crystalline silica materials.
Since 1 October 2023, Inspectors have issued 6 improvement notices against Work Health and Safety Regulation s418D (Duty to train workers about crystalline silica awareness) and have issued 5 infringement notices to the value of $30,000 for uncontrolled dry cutting of engineered stone.
This serves as a great reminder that under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011, persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) must ensure all workers who fall under the list of specified occupations and those who may be exposed to silica dust as part of their work complete the Nationally accredited course 10830NAT – Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention prior to 1 October 2023. If this has not been completed, you will be unable to undertake work until this has been addressed.
What will an Inspector check for onsite?
A WorkSafe ACT Inspector may ask to see training records. The inspector may also request a worker to show them their silica card or certificate of attainment.
If you don’t have it on you, you will need to provide it or evidence of completion of the course within a reasonable timeframe as requested by the Inspector. If you need to get a new card or certificate, you can contact the RTO who delivered your course.
Failure to comply will result in regulatory action and a fine for non-compliance.
