Workers' Memorial Day and World Day for Safety and Health at Work

28 APRIL 2022

Today is Workers' Memorial Day. The theme for this year is ‘Make safe and healthy work a fundamental right. It’s a no-brainer’.  April 28 is also World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

This day provides us with an opportunity to reflect and remember those workers who have lost their lives due to work.

Safe Work Australia data shows that already this year 52 Australian workers have died from a traumatic injury and in 2020, 194 workers were fatally injured at work. We know that all workplace deaths are preventable, and this data underlines the ongoing need for a determined and continued effort to prevent work-related incidents, illnesses and diseases.

Today the Work Health and Safety Commissioner, Jacqueline Agius attended a ceremony at the National Workers’ Memorial and paid homage to the workers who have died at work. In the ACT, three lives have been lost at work since 2020.

“We are here to mourn and honour the lives of the workers who went to work and who did not come home. We stand with their families and loved ones.”

“We can only honour the memory of these workers by how we act in the present, by how we shape the future of workplaces and by fighting for the lives of the living. It is a day to recommit that every worker has a right to a safe workplace.”

The theme for this year's World Day for Safety and Health at Work is ‘Act together to build a positive safety and health culture’.

“We believe that every Canberran has the right to be safe at work, both physically and psychologically. We are here because we know healthy and safe workplaces are possible for all.”

The Commissioner and WorkSafe ACT encourage all workplaces to foster a strong work health and safety culture and make sure everyone goes home safely.
