Media Release - International Workers' Memorial Day

Sunday 28 April was International Workers’ Memorial Day, a day to reflect and remember working Australians who have lost their lives while at work and reflect on the importance of safety in the workplace.
Safe Work Australia data shows that 29 Australian workers have already been killed at work in 2024, following the 175 that were killed at work in 2023.
The International Trades Union Congress made this years’ theme for Workers' Memorial Day ’the impacts of climate change on occupational health and safety’.
On Monday 29 April, UnionsACT hosted a ceremony at the Workers’ Memorial in Kings Park. Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius spoke at the event, paying homage to Australian workers who have lost their lives while at work and reinforced the importance identifying emerging WHS risks.
“The most dangerous risk is one you don’t know about. We must always be identifying hazards, controlling them and then reviewing to ensure controls remain effective. Safety can never be set and forget.
Commissioner Agius and WorkSafe ACT encourage all workplaces to foster a strong health and safety culture and make sure everyone gets home safely.
